Among the types of University-Industry collaborations that can be formed are the following: (i) Collaboration in R&D and commercialisation of R&D products funded by the Industry; (ii) Sponsorship of professor's Chair in certain knowledge disciplines; (iii) Involvement in educational programmes and professional training either at the undergraduate level or post-graduate; (iv) Consultancy services to assist in industry needs and problems; (v) Industrial training, students mobility programme and graduate employability; (vi) Human capital training among students and staff of UPM as well as the Industry.
Among the Community Programmes that can be implemented are: (i) International Networking (ii) Community Well-being (iii) Human Capital Development Programme(iv) Appreciation of Culture and Nature (v) Incubator Programme (vi) Innovation and Invention Programme(vii) Cancer Programme (viii) Halal Development Programme(ix) Indigenous Community Development Programme(x) Entrepreneurship Development Programme (xi) Extension Service Programme to the Community(xii) Senior Community Programme (xiii) Promotion of the University and its experts(xiv) School Adoption Programme

A Document of Understanding is required for special projects which are comprehensive, i.e. have certain reference terms to achieve certain targeted mission and activity for a certain duration, which involves procedures, regulations and finance as well as require specific monitoring between UPM and the relevant party. Simple one-off activities such as school adoption programme, field trips and industrial talks do not require any Document of Understanding. Submission of a proposal paper is sufficient.
The said document takes approximately three months to be processed and approved.
Industry Community Appreciation Networking (iCAN) UPM is an annual programme held since 2010, with aim to appreciate and acknowledge contributions from industries and communities to the university.
The recognition awards are not only just for industries and communities, but also extended to university entities (PTJ), staffs and students who are actively involved with industry and community relation programmes/activities.
UPM’s High Impact Industry & Community Relation Awards are divided into 3 main categories; Industry, Community and PTJ (Faculty/School/Centre/ Division/Entity).
For Industry and Community Category, award will be given to the best industry/community relation project among students, non-academic staffs, academic staffs and industry/community partners.
3.a) Evaluation for High Impact Industry Relation Project are eligible for all 5-stars rated projects. For Industry Projects, star rating are based on the relation dimension. For each relation dimensions achieved will be rated in stars accordingly. Five (5) relation dimensions that have been identified are as follows:
1. Interest in establishing network/collaboration/relation,
2. Collaboration activity in both parties began,
3. Collaboration activity is highly beneficial to both parties,
4. Continuous support by industry to collaborate in current year activity from pass year,
5. Contribution by industry in form of cash or equivalent exceeding RM150,000.00.
3.b) Evaluation for High Impact Community Relation Project are eligible for all 4 and 5 Stars rated projects. High Impact Community Relation Project (4 and 5 stars rated) are defined as project that has achieved the empowerment level where the benefited community able to improve their skills, economic, social and well-being status after the knowledge transfer programme from UPM.
Industry and Community Projects eligible candidates for academic staff category are listed from the Industry and Community Relations Intelligence System (iCRIS) based on previous year's achievement that has been reported by every academic staffs.
The event will be held annually around April for the following year (after the University’s Industry and Community Relations Key Performance Index (KPIs) are presented at the university level). Application submission dateline will be in the middle of March in year of the event being held.
Applicant can log on to our website in www.tncjinm.upm.edu.my to download YSD Scholarship application form and fill in information based on the checklist given. Completed form can be submitted by hand or post to Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Industry & Community Relations).
Studies duration for Master Science Programme is 2 years and for Ph.D up to 3 years.
For Master Programme student will receive RM 2000 as monthly allowance and RM 2300 for Ph.D programme. For books allowance, RM 1200 annually.
Guarantor can be anyone who have a minimum of RM3000 of gross income.
